Welcome to Somaliland — Africa’s Hidden Gem in the Horn
Nestled in the northeastern corner of Africa along the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden, the Republic of Somaliland is one of the continent’s most fascinating and resilient self-governing nations. Bordered by Djibouti to the northwest, Ethiopia to the south and west, and the rest of Somalia to the east, Somaliland covers an area of 176,120 square kilometres and is home to approximately 6.2 million people as of 2024.
While Somaliland awaits full international recognition — with Israel becoming the first UN member state to formally recognise it in December 2025 — it has functioned as a stable, democratically governed state since declaring independence on 18 May 1991, following the collapse of the Somali central government. Its capital and largest city, Hargeisa, is a thriving urban centre and the political and economic heart of the nation.
